In my last email, I told you about some patients who complained that they missed their face masks…
…Because suddenly, they had no way to cover up their sagging jowls.
Today, I want to tell you about an opposite phenomenon…
Patients who only have sagging jowls *because* of their masks!
I should preface this by saying that I am 100% in favor of mask-wearing when and where the law or your work regulations require – or if you or anyone around you is at risk.
Masks significantly reduce the risk of transmission of COVID between people, and saving lives is more important than saving jowls!
That said, I’ve noticed this trend amongst people who wear tight masks or professional N95-respirator Masks for long periods of time…
This typically includes healthcare professionals like me, as well as teachers or people in service businesses.
The very tight mask creates a sort of indentation a few centimeters under their eyes, right at the top of the mask.
If you looked at that spot under your skin, you’d see lots of ligaments that hold up the lower part of your face, keeping your jowls and jawline nice and taut. It’s like the very top of puppet strings or marionette strings…
When the mask presses the skin in that exact spot day after day, it weakens those ligaments, creating what we call “Indian bands” (I’m not sure why, but that’s the medical term).
And this causes your jowls to start sagging lower down.
Sagging jowls are one of the features which people typically hate because it changes the shape of your face.
When patients’ jowls start to drop, they often tell me that they no longer recognize the face staring back at them in the mirror…
It’s very aging.
The problem is, if you need to wear a mask routinely for any reason, it might be unavoidable.
As I said, the solution isn’t to drop your mask – you may not be able to or want to, legally and medically.
But you don’t have to put up with sagging jowls, either.
Happily, we have two fantastic jowl treatments which can give you back your tight, firm jawline, rolling back the clock by at least a few years.
The first is a jowl thread lift. This involves inserting a small number of threads under your skin, which “yank” the jowls back up. It’s like they’re doing the ligaments’ work to support the skin in this area!
The threads dissolve after a few months, but the impact doesn’t end. Before they disappear, they also trigger your body to produce a lot more collagen around the same lines.
Collagen is a key protein in your body that keeps your skin firm and taut. So again, it’s like you’re replacing – or rather reinforcing – the damaged ligaments a second time.
The procedure takes less than an hour and the results look incredibly natural, which is why this is one of the most popular treatments I perform.

When you look at those pictures, notice how much younger my patient looks after we lifted her sagging jowls!
For some people, we combine the Jowl Lift with some Kybella – that’s an injectable treatment that dissolves fat. We use this to slim down your jawline if you have a bit of excess fat in the area, so that your entire jawline looks as elegant and as youthful as it can.
It takes a couple of sessions but you’ll see results fast, starting around 6 weeks after treatment and continuing to improve for around 6 months.
Both treatments – Threadlifts and Kybella – are also perfect if you’d like to treat your neck at the same time, getting rid of a double chin or giving your neck a bit of a ‘lift’ as well.
(You can see a beautiful example of a double chin reduction with Kybella by clicking here.)
