What is Juvederm? How does it work?
Juvederm is made from hyaluronic acid, or HA, which is actually in our bodies already. The gel-like consistency is injected superficially into the dermis and attracts water beneath the skin; this is to trap moisture, as well as add volume, in the folds of the wrinkles. HA fillers also promote collagen production in the dermis. Collagen is a protein that is responsible for the firmness in our skin that allows for a more youthful appearance. We begin losing collagen during adulthood, and continue to do so as we age. This is due to the fact that our skin slows down on creating it.*
Types of Juvederm
There are different forms of this filler, made to be compatible with certain areas of the face. Juvederm XC and Ultra are commonly used on the upper part of the face in fine lines; lines such as crow’s feet and frown lines are usually treated with XC and Ultra. Voluma is a thicker variant that is used in the mid face, such as the cheeks. The newest form is Volbella, which is made specially for precise lip injections.
Treatment
Fillers are injectable treatments, which means they are administered through a syringe. Juvederm contains lidocaine so that there will be a lack of pain or discomfort. If you are still nervous about the initial injection, you may receive a cold pack to numb the treatment site beforehand. The injections are made with a small needle and they are relatively quick with no downtime.* The amount of syringes or units needed is specific to each patient, which is why it’s important to schedule a consultation.
Results
The results of Juvederm typically last about a year. Side effects are minimal and should subside on their own. These effects include: tenderness, soreness, itchiness, redness and swelling. It may take a day or two for the swelling to completely subside and you are left with your final look.*
