How is a Tumescent Liposuction Performed?
Tumescent liposuction uses a saline solution combined with a dilute local anesthetic, epinephrine, and adrenaline which are combined and injected into the treatment area. The injected area becomes locally anesthetized to alleviate any pain. Sometimes a mild oral sedative is given to help relax and reduce any anxiety. After the anesthesia takes effect, a metal tube called a cannula is inserted into small incisions in the skin and then suction is used to remove the unwanted fat cells. The incisions and the cannula are very small so it heals without the use of sutures and leaves minimal to no scarring.
As part of the procedure, a large volume of dilute lidocaine is injected into the targeted area to be treated before the liposuction which causes the fat to swell and increase firmness. This solution enables better accuracy in fat removal and minimizes rippling of the skin and other potential skin irregularities. Also, the tumescent solution substantially minimizes bruising, blood loss, and post-operative soreness.
