Excessive Sweat Elimination by Parfaire

Botox Treatment for Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition in which a person sweats excessively and unpredictably. It commonly affects the palms of the hands and underarm areas.

To treat this condition in the past, a topical cream type preparation using aluminum chloride was commonly used. It caused aluminum salts to be formed in the sweat glands which would block the secretion of sweat. This treatment required daily application and was not always effective.

Now, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Botox for the treatment of hyperhidrosis. Botox is a neuromodulator that can be injected at the affected areas including the hands, under the arms, scalp, and feet. While Botox has been more commonly used for decades to treat wrinkles, it also is highly effective at stopping the release of sweat. On average, sweating can be reduced by 80 to 90% after just a single treatment.

Prior to the treatment, the doctor might perform an “Iodine Starch Kit Test”* to visually identify the sweat glands on your palm or underarm so the Botox can be injected into the sweat gland precisely. Then a series of small injections to the affected area are done to paralyze the nerve and stop the sweat glands from releasing sweat. The finest gauge needle is typically used during the procedure along with local anesthetics to minimize any pain or discomfort.

We generally use 50 units of Botox per underarm which has proved to be the most effective quantity. Botox injections are typically performed about 7 to 8 months apart to maintain the effect. The effect will last even longer after several treatments.

We recommend not to wax, shave or do any laser treatment to the targeted area 24 hours prior the procedure. You can expect to see results in 5 to 7 days.

*”Iodine Starch Kit Test”: We use a special powder to put on to the area of sweating concern. The powder turns purple which highlights the sweat glands so we can tell exactly the area of sweating. We do not inject Botox beyond the area of sweating.
